The Journey of a Picture

The Coates House c. 1915

For two and a half years, I combed through countless resources – from library books, internet searches, museum archives, and even county records in search of an old picture of my home, the historic Coates House. I reached out to anyone and everyone who might have information, in turn, they reached out to their own connections. Along this path, I encountered many kind-hearted individuals who were not only willing but excited to assist me in my quest. Each interaction left me filled with gratitude, reaffirming the existence of genuinely kind souls in this world, who offer help without any ulterior motives.

A Serendipitous Moment

I knew this picture existed and had once hung in the kitchen above the door. Despite countless dead ends and detours, a glimmer of faith shielded me from giving up. I continued to cling to the hope that someday I would lay eyes on it.

And then a serendipitous moment unfolded, and a compassionate soul bestowed upon me the very picture I had tirelessly pursued for years. Tears welled up in my eyes as the reality of a long search finally came to light. Even now, as I admire this slightly imperfect picture of the original, I am overcome with an indescribable joy.

Be still my heart.

Picture Comparison of Then and Now

When I look at this picture, there are some things that instantly stand out to me. I do not know the exact year, although I’m guessing circa 1915. The trees that now surround the house have yet to be planted. The bushes that line the walkway have yet to be selected. The windmill is now gone, as are the buildings behind the house, although the stones that once supported them remain. The barn next door has long been torn down and the streets have been paved. Through all the changes, this beloved beauty stands proud, strong, determined, and welcoming.

Finally, a long-awaited piece of the puzzle falls into place in the grand tapestry of my cherished home’s narrative. It is a treasure and a pivotal milestone in my personal journey. As I continue to preserve The Coates House and its history, I am reminded that even in our smallest victories, there is magic to be found.

The First “Old” Picture I Found

In my search, I was able to locate a photo of The Coates House circa 1972. The yard has trees in it and the walkway appears to be freshly lined with the hedges. The white picket fence still surrounds the front yard. The chainlink fence to the right hasn’t been installed, nor has the pool and fence to the left. It’s my understanding the house may have been an army green color at this time before it was eventually painted yellow.

In the Spring, we are focusing on landscaping. I would like to recreate something similar to the bushes across the front of the house.

I would love to have the c. 1915 picture enhanced to a quality that would allow me to have it framed. If you have recommendations on where or whom I could work with to accomplish that, please leave me a comment or send me an email at aninspirednest@gmail.com. Thank you!
