Why drop cloth curtains? There are several reasons why I chose to make my own drop cloth curtains instead of purchasing store bought curtains. Handmade drop cloth curtains have the casual, lived-in farmhouse style of linen at a fraction of the price. They are durable and washable (in a home of boys + pets, everything needs to be able to go in the washing machine). The heaviness of the drop cloth material offers the perfect amount of privacy layered in front of my bamboo shades. And, as a bonus, if I ever feel like a change I can repurpose them into pillows, cover a chair with them, or make a bulletin board. My decision was clear as the Texas sky!
These no sew curtains complete with a top ruffle are incredibly easy to make! In an hour, my windows went from bare to beautiful. Here’s how yours can too:
Materials
- two canvas drop cloths (I used Everbilt Canvas Dropcloth 9ft x 12ft from my local Home Depot. There are different sizes available based on your needs. I wanted the curtains to cover the entire wall behind my master bed so I opted for a larger size. When selecting your size keep in mind the wall space you’d like to cover as well as your ceiling height.)
- curtain clip rings (I used Syrlig curtain clips from IKEA. I’ve also seen similar clips on Amazon too.)
- iron + ironing board
How To
- Wash and dry the drop cloths.
- Iron out the wrinkles. Honestly, this is the most time consuming part of this whole process!
- Determine the height of the curtains.
- Spread the drop cloth out on the floor or a table.
- Fold over the top of the drop cloth to create the desired length. This fold will create the top ruffle. Use a measuring tape to ensure the fold is the same from one end to the other.
- Clip a curtain clip onto each end of the drop cloth. Then add one in the middle. Continue adding the clips until they are spaced to your liking. I added 10 clips to each side of my curtains.
- That’s it. They are ready to hang!
To Puddle or Not to Puddle
My drop cloth curtains are puddled on the floor. I like the casual feeling the puddling brings to the space. My kids like the puddling because they can play hide-and-seek without their toes giving away their hiding spot. Go with what looks good to you… and remember this can always be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the ruffle fold if you change your mind down the road.

Do the canvas material shrink in the dryer?
I let my canvas air dry. I would suspect that it would shrink a bit in the dryer; however, they are pretty long and pool on the floor so a little shrinkage probably wouldn’t make too much of a difference. Thank you for asking!
